In rapidly pluralizing societies, the role of religion is frequently questioned. Even if religion is deemed relevant, the challenge is still how do we talk with people who hold differing worldviews and, moreover, frequently do not share our cultural or linguistic background.
My chapter in The Routledge Handbook of Language and Religion (2024) looks at how people who voluntarily participate in intercultural and interreligious dialogues use their multiplicity of languages to create meaning and demonstrate hospitality in conversations that most often occur in a lingua franca. It also raises questions about how these spaces, in unintended ways, can perpetuate inequality
